Why feature Tools & Equipment?

Simply put, we get off on coming up with inventive, cool, & trick tooling or equipment that makes life in the custom car building game a little easier. Some of you may already have or seen these tools or have better ideas than we do. (be sure to give us a call to share those ideas and maybe we'll feature them on our site.) Another reason for a tool feature is to simply share ideas for those who may be contemplating a future project or who are looking for a better "mouse trap". This is what our hobby is all about--sharing ideas and helping each other out. We also want to feature tools or products that were generously donated for our projects.

Chassis & Body Rotisarie

Most of you have probably seen or heard of a body/chassis rotisarie, so nothing new here, except a little Dutchman overkill. How about bronze bushed spindles at both ends and a 60:1 worm gear box on the headstock end which kills two birds with one stone: 1st, it makes rotating things much easier, and 2nd, once your part is rotated to the desired working angle, it stays in position without the use of a jam bolt on the spindle. We also added a removable tow hitch and large enough rear tires and spindles for towing (this is cool, no more disassembly & reassembly and hauling in separate pieces). What can we say, we're bad!

Wheel Skates

Green Oak Enterprises (car-dolly.com) supplied these nifty wheel skates which are normally used under the tires of your project vehicle. Creative improvising is what its all about in our hobby and we've done just that here. Combining the mobility of the wheel skates and the flexibility of jack stands, we can now move our project chassis in & out of the garage with no suspension while we do the motor, tranny, and rearend mock ups & installations. We simply drilled two holes in the head of each jack stand and made some adaptor plates which bolt to the bumper bolt holes in the frame & the two holes in the jack stand head. We also made, using some flat stock & angle iron, keepers for the bottom of the jack stands to keep them from slipping off the wheel skates. The keepers simply bolt to the top of each skate using the caster studs and nuts. Simple idea and works great!

P-Ayr Lightweight Motor

If you've never seen or used these lightweight motors for chassis design & building, let me tell you how I wished I'd had this for previous project cars. Features include threaded boss's for complete mock up & mounting of accessories and motor mounts, and it can be lifted into place without a cherry picker or hoist. Sure, this adds to the project cost, but using this motor for our motor & tranny mount installations will enable us to pospone buying the real engine till we are ready. This is important especially when the crate motor has a 12 month warranty which we don't want to expire while we're building the car. P-Ayr (payr.com) makes a complete line of plastic motors, transmissions, & other accessories for chassis construction and display.
